In the summer of 1959 a group of dedicated Christians met on several occasions with the purpose of organizing a new church connected to the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). It was to be located in the east side of Albuquerque. The first of these meetings was held in June of 1959.
The first worship was held October 25, 1959 with 29 people in attendance. The service was conducted by a lay minister from Monte Vista Christian Church, a sister congregation in Albuquerque.
The organizing group was allowed to utilize close by facilities in a Lutheran church and later in at Little Kiddie Corral Kindergarten school until a facility was built and moved into in February of 1962. It was while in the kindergarten that the membership began to grow.
The new facility served as a sanctuary, fellowship hall, and educational facility until an education building was dedicated in October of 1965.
These two facilities allowed for the continued growth of the church membership as well as its ability to serve the local community. The membership sought for ways to reach out and serve those in need in Albuquerque.
The final facility on the property was a sanctuary building that allowed the existing sanctuary to become a bigger fellowship hall. The new sanctuary was dedicated and moved into in May 1998.
The membership of this congregation through the years has leaned on those who have gone before them. The church has been filled with numerous gifts to help this church with its ministry, mission, program, and facility upkeep. The faithful dedication has allowed this church to continue being a community church in east Albuquerque. Some of the meaningful projects undertaken by the church are:
-
Designed and made all the stained glass in the sanctuary
-
Implemented a design for the full landscape of the church facilities to be xeriscaped with low water usage.
-
Created ministries and programs to engage both members, visitors, and service to our community and abroad.
-
Designed worship services that allowed people to grow closer to God through Jesus Christ.
The church is also grateful for the many ministers that have served this church with dedication and faithfulness. We remember warmly that our ministers over the years have served as vital anchors in our spiritual journey. Each one has helped us to develop a part of who we are. They have been an important influence in the life of this church. A list of the senior ministers who have served this congregation are as follows.
